Halifax – The Hours Turn To Nothing

April 28 - April 29

April 28 & 29

“Collaborating with internationally acclaimed author Ami McKay (The Birth House, The Virgin Cure), Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble presents an original work of choral theatre that explores the role midwives, nurses, and women played in the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion. The Halifax Explosion (December 6, 1917) killed 2,000 people and seriously injured another 9,000. The blast was the largest human-made explosion in history until the introduction of the atom bomb. Amid the stories of death, ruin, and injury, it is lesser known that many pregnant women living within range of the explosion went into spontaneous labour from the force of the blast, regardless of the gestational age of their unborn children. Midwives from across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Northeastern USA boarded trains within hours of hearing the news to assist in the aftermath. Featuring dynamic choral music, poignant staging, and text and narrative written by Ami McKay, this exciting new work will premiere in Halifax before touring across Nova Scotia in spring 2017.”
